Concrete Cracking – Best Practices

Date: October 5, 2022

Time: Noon – 1:00 pm CDT

Presenter: Kim D. Basham, PhD, PE, FACI. (Senior Structural Engineer, KB Engineering, LLC)

Description: Concrete provides structures with strength, rigidity, and resilience from deformation. These characteristics, however, result in concrete structures lacking the flexibility to move in response to environmental or volume changes. Cracking is usually the first sign of distress in concrete. Cracking of concrete flatwork is natural, expected, and accepted. However, cracks may affect appearance, performance, and maintenance costs. This presentation will discuss the various types of concrete cracks and how to best minimize their occurrence.

Learning Objectives:

  • 1.    Understand the different types of cracking in concrete.
  • 2.    Understand what causes concrete to crack.
  • 3.    Understand how to evaluate the difference between structural cracks and cosmetic cracks
  • 4.    At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will know how to minimize concrete cracks.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Kim Basham is a senior structural engineer at KB Engineering, LLC.   He obtained his B.S. and M.S. in Structural Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Wyoming.

Dr. Basham is a member of the ACI 306 - Cold Weather Concreting Committee, ACI 302 – Concrete Floor and Slab Construction and ACI 347 – Formwork Construction of the American Concrete Institute; American Society of Civil Engineers; The Concrete Society, American Society of Concrete Contractors; and International Concrete Repair Institute.

Dr. Basham specializes in structural analysis, concrete design, mix designs, concrete specifications and preconstruction, formwork, shoring and reshoring, temporary structures, mass concrete placements, slabs on grade, as-cast surface finishes, concrete forensic investigations, structural evaluations, condition surveys, destructive and nondestructive testing, concrete repair, concrete construction techniques, concrete technology and research.

Sponsors: This webinar was developed cooperatively by concrete-related associations from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.  The goal of the cooperative effort is to bring a greater awareness of cast-in-place concrete to the design and construction communities via quality continuing education programs.  (MCC, NDCC, SDRMCA, WRMCA)
