The Role of Materials in Sustainable Concrete Pavement Construction

Date: March 23, 2022

Time: Noon – 1:00 pm CST

Presenter: Dr. Peter C. Taylor P.E.  (Director, CPTech Center)

Description: With increasing discussion about the need to control global warming, engineers are starting to pay attention to how they can reduce the environmental impact of their work. This presentation will review what actions have been taken in recent years to reduce carbon footprint in concrete construction, as well as offer some thoughts on what actions can be taken today, and dream a little about the future.

Learning Objectives:

  • 1.    Discuss the source of carbon dioxide in production of concrete infrastructure systems
  • 2.    Describe actions that can be taken to change manufacturing processes to reduce carbon footprint
  • 3.    Debate how these changes can be implemented under current contractual systems
  • 4.    Understand what actions have been taken in recent years to reduce carbon footprint in concrete construction

Speaker Bio:Peter Taylor is the Director of the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center at Iowa State University.  He is involved in conducting projects and programs investigating materials related aspects of concrete pavements.  He also spends time helping agencies and contractors implement best practices in concrete pavement design, construction and maintenance.  His research is focused on developing mixtures that are engineered to meet the requirements of the environment that will be used in.

He is a Professional Engineer, registered in Illinois and active in a number of professional societies.

About the Sustainable Structures Webinar Series

Now in its second year, the Sustainable Structures Webinar Series was developed cooperatively in 2021 by cast-in-place and precast concrete associations from the Midwest region of the United States including Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.  The goal of the cooperative effort is to bring a greater awareness of the sustainable and resilient nature of concrete building systems to the design, construction, and development communities via quality continuing education programs.

Continuing Education Credits

AIA credits for these live webinars are being processed by the Minnesota Concrete Council – AIA Provider G538.  Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance from the Minnesota Concrete Council for one professional development hour (PDH) within ten business days of the conclusion of the event.
